How to use essential oils topically

There are three ways you can apply essential oils: aromatically (breathing), internally (swallowing), and topically.  Of these three, topically is probably the most commonly used method for horses, and presents the most options for how you can use these oils.

Start by using oils that are the highest quality you can get.  Many brands are synthetic and do not actually contain the healing properties that are found in natural plant-derived essential oils. For information on where to get effective essential oils, contact me!

All essential oils can be used topically, but where and how you use them will vary by your needs and which oils fit that need.  For example, if you are using oils for wound care, you would apply diluted oils directly to the wound using a small spray bottle or a homemade salve.  Whereas if you’re using them for a healthy coat, you would apply them all over during bath time by mixing them in your equine shampoo or by making a simple rinse solution.

Here are a few ideas for how to use essential oils topically, but there are so many more ways to use them than this! Get creative, and keep following this blog for more upcoming tricks and recipes.

Melaleuca (tea tree) - blend with Castile soap and use as a shampoo for a healthy, shiny coat.  It also has antibacterial and antifungal properties that you can use to help fight seasonal problems such as rain rot or thrush.

Wintergreen or Soothing Blend - spray or sponge onto inflamed muscles and joints, or post-workout to help relieve sore muscles

Lavender - spray, wash, or make a salve for itchy spots

Protective Blend - spray or sponge onto wounds, or make a salve, to fight germs.  I like to mix it with Frankincense for extra goodness.
