Fly Control, The Oily Way
For over a year now, I have been making bug repellent to use on my own skin when at the stables, and using standard commercial fly spray on Apollo. Then, the stroke of genius - why not make one spray that is effective and safe for both of us?
So I did.
And the extra perk? It smells so much nicer!
Here's my recipe, so you can make your own.
In a 1 quart spray bottle (I like my Orbital bottle, which also works upside down), combine:
15 ml "Terra Shield blend" (or other essential oil bug repellent blend)15 ml Lavender essential oil5 ml Peppermint or spearmint essential oil15 ml Patchouli essential oil60 ml Fractionated coconut oil or other veggie oil - this helps the oil stick longer on hair or skin, so it evaporates more slowly and has a longer effect.2 Tablespoons soap (any unscented liquid soap) - this emulsifies the oils so you dont have to shake as much or frequently while spraying
Finally, fill the rest of the bottle with 1/2 apple cider vinegar and 1/2 water.
Shake well before use. Apply daily or as needed. This spray repels flies, mosquitos and ticks.
Safety precautions: Do not get it in eyes (it will be painful but not dangerous). Also, since it smells good, keep it away from anything that might drink it (would result in upset tummy).
