An Oily Alternative to Mare Magic

Spring is here, and many a mare-owner are dealing with the resulting hormonal effects of the changing season.  A popular product for moody mares is called “Mare Magic,” an excellent natural equine feed supplement made from dried raspberry leaves.

If you are one of these, and have found the effects limited or the cost prohibitive,* it may be time to try an oily solution. If your mare has been having good results with the raspberry leaves, you could use these essential oils together with the Mare Magic for extra benefits.

Here’s an oily pony list of hormone-balancing essential oils to try.  You may want to use just one, or up to three in combination.

Rose
Geranium
Bergamot
Clary Sage
Yarrow
Peppermint
Marjoram

In addition to hormone balancing, you may want to add a few drops of a calming oil such as lavender or a cheering oil such as a joyful blend to help with your mare’s mood.

These oils an be added to your mare’s feed ration, or applied topically as a spray or in a DIY cream.

*Although bottles of essential oils can be pricey, remember that you will only be using a few drops at a time.  Per moody mare-serving, oils are by far the cheaper choice.
